Neuromuscular therapy

What it involves

Neuromuscular therapy uses hands-on techniques, including massage, to treat trigger points (knots) in muscles, which relieves pain and improves range of motion.

What to expect

Your visit will start with a history of your current problem and any relevant medical issues, and an assessment of your posture and movement patterns to determine a treatment plan.

Treatment will focus on your problem area and consists of manipulation techniques and massage, which is carried out on bare skin using a hypoallergenic massage lotion or oil. You should wear comfortable clothes which allow you to move (eg. shorts, tank top or sports bra) and will be dressed or covered by a sheet and/or towel at all times.

No part of the treatment should be painful. Your therapist will aim to stay well inside your pain tolerance and check in with you regularly to make sure you’re comfortable.

Treatments last 45 minutes.

What can neuromuscular therapy help with?

  • Chronic pain, including lower back pain
  • Overuse/repetitive strain injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Headaches
  • Changes in sensation, eg. numbness, tingling

Neuromuscular therapy is a gentle treatment and can be used to allow the body to feel safe while re-learning movement patterns which have become inaccessible.
