Sports massage
Sports massage has been shown to:
- Reduce pain, stress, and inflammation
- Aid healing
- Improve muscle tone and flexibility
Competitive athletes use massage therapy to promote recovery and allow them to get the most out of their training, but it can relieve muscle aches, strains, stiffness, or tension in anyone, no matter how these came about.
What can sports massage help with?
- Recovery from training or injury, eg. strains, sprains, repetitive strain
- Everyday aches, muscle knots, stiffness
- Loss of range of motion
What to expect
Sports massage is usually carried out on bare skin using a hypoallergenic massage lotion or oil. You’ll be asked to undress to your level of comfort and while you’re on the massage table will be covered by a sheet and/or towel at all times. Only the area being treated will be exposed.
No part of the treatment should be painful. Your therapist will check in with you regularly to make sure you’re comfortable and the amount of pressure is neither too much nor too little.
What length of treatment should I book?
- A 45 minute massage is a good length to treat either the upper or lower body – a good choice if you prefer to focus on a problem area.
- A full body massage can also be carried out in 45 minutes, but without any extra attention to specific sore or tight areas – a good choice for all-over maintenance.
- A 90 minute massage is suitable to treat the whole body, while thoroughly addressing any problem areas.
